When Should Children Receive Eye Exams?

The first time your child should have an eye exam is when they are around six months of age. The exam will help our optometrist check if your child’s eyes are developing correctly. Afterward, they should visit us every year, especially right before they are school age. Since certain conditions can prevent your child from seeing objects close or far away and impact their learning, we can detect these issues early and offer treatment.

What to Expect During a Pediatric Eye Exam

During a pediatric eye exam, our eye doctor will utilize symbols and flash cards to learn more about your child’s vision. Once they reach school age and learn the alphabet, the regular Snellen eye chart test will be used. We’ll also measure the shape of the eye and see how light refracts. Additionally, once their eyes are dilated, our optometrist is going to check the optic nerve, retina, and for any eye diseases.

Vision Correction

Your child could very well have excellent vision and not need any kind of eyeglasses. However, if they do, it's best that they find out early. Otherwise, their grades might suffer and they may squint a lot in class, which can lead to headaches from eye strain. Our optometrists can recommend glasses that will improve your child’s vision and suit their lifestyle. If your child is old enough, we can also discuss contact lenses and assist with the insertion or removal process.
